Profile / Heidi Crompton, triathlete
July 7, 2006
Background A freestyle swimmer at Mt. Carmel High and Fresno State, Crompton first sampled triathlon atop a mountain bike. She has shifted to a road bike with nice success at the sprint distances. At the recent Mission Bay Spring Sprint Triathlon, Crompton, 28, won her age division, finishing the quarter-mile swim, 9-mile bike ride and 3-mile run in 59 minutes, 49 seconds.
Quick hits Crompton is a fifth-grade teacher who lives in Rancho Bernardo. She races for the Wheels on Wheels triathlon team. She was born in England.
Quotable Crompton on triathlon's lure: "It's addicting. Every race you're learning something new."
Job hazardsTwo months before she was to run the Honolulu Marathon last December, Crompton stepped in a gopher hole while playing tag with students on the school playground. She recovered from the sprained ankle and finished the marathon in 4 hours, 47 minutes.
No mas Crompton, when asked if she'll attempt another marathon: "I'm just going to stick to triathlons. I need that swim to get me a lead."
Training log On average, Crompton swims 9 miles a week, runs 18-24 miles and rides about 60 miles.
