This past weekend I participated in the San Diego Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk, 60 miles over the course of three days. There were lots of women and men walkingfor many different reasons, some were walking for them selves or in support of others.During the weekend I went to visit Nikee Pomper at the Command Center, a very high tech bus from where she was directing the event. She was very busy but had the time to show me around the bus and answer questions, all with a big smile! Thank you to all of you who donated money to this great cause, you are awesome and I thought about each one of you during the long walks! Please don't be surprised if I asked you for a donation for the 2007 walk, I am thinking about doing it again...Gladys

day eight--caf course-56 miles it's getting quite hard to find any nice spot sitting on the bike...we are all pretty tired and the legs are having less and less in them. this am was the hardest to tolerate eating. ithink because i'm nervous for salvador and it feels more like race day---all the hype. the caf event is so inspirational---some amazing people. we take off at about 9;30---today is the warmest day of all our rides. (we've truly been blessed with great weather thru out) that damn la jolla shores hill never gets easy and by day 8 its down right brutal!!! i take off--i got onto the course late and catch up to my favorite group to ride with. we work together thru rancho and near la costa decide to do a starbucks stop--what the hell--its day 8 and we have to wait at the shores til 1pm anyway. the 20min plus stop plays wonderful tricks on your legs and going up the hill makes for a nice warm up. the coast is the coast--not as nice of headwind as the day before. 5 of us are working together and stay bike to bike as we go up torrey ( not as easy today as it was yesterday) and then i see my hubby just around the corner near ucsd--he's not feeling so great. we end up hanging out at the shores till almost 1;30---we finally head to the cove with a police escort...man it feels great to be done....but i can't wait to do my next 100 mile ride...we truly are sick people.
day seven--dana point to jcc--54 miles(nothing at this point!!!) i'm riding with some friends and their wives so i'm safe...the guys can't go fast or they'll be in trouble from the wife!! fairly warm day--scenery is'nt great--but we are in our own training zone now. every thing is familiar and that can be nice or sometimes boring so less inspiring. had a great tail wind down the coast so coming home was pretty easy...even torrey pines was fairly easy after six days of riding. we held up at ucsd parking lot (had ice cream bars and beer--i'm telling you i've lost NO weight with all of this riding) we all entered the jcc together and it felt GREAT. we were all so happy to be home. had more to eat--an entire pizza myself then went home to do laundry. one more day!!!
Friday, November 3
day six--marina del ray to dana point i'm going out with the big boys today---its amazing but it keeps taking longer to warm up my legs....going up a hill todayat about 1 hourinto the ride and my thighs still felt full. i'm finding i need a little hill and getting my heart rate up to 160 plus for a little bit and then i feel better!!! three guys and i made a break to get away from a big group(these guys are really good and they were slowwing up a bit for me--thank you!!!!)it was so cool we were flying down the hills sucking off the guy in front and yep--we lost the others but then we had togo through redondo--ugh...stop and start. after lunch we hammered through--my friend rich kept saying we didn't have to go that hard and he'd hang back with me---well i was not going to let that happen . i said i was pushing until i couldn't push any more and i pretty much did. we had a short but steep hill to climb to get into the hotel and my legs almost wouldn't goaround another revolution. when i got off the bike i could barely stand they were shaking and felt like they were going to collapse---man was that awesome...tomorrow we head home...get to see my husband and d.j.---can't wait!!! get to sleep in my own bed and wear some clean clothes(at least cleaner than those wev'e had ) just two more days---we will be coming in to the jcc at about 1pm and then its rest time....till then michelle
day--uh--i think its thursday day 5--santa barbara to marina dal ray beautiful day--warmest its been . we rode through strawberry fields--nice and flat and fast and then headed in toward the coast. i had been doing alot of pulling and enjoying my ride thinking of when the jacobs clan was going to pass us and sure enough here they came. you have to be pretty fast to jump on the back of that train and hold 28mph!!! i let 'em go today--maybe next time! lunch was at a beautiful spot--pt. mugu--the ride from there was absolutely gorgeous--check out the pics!. rode with some good riders and at one point we were cruising at about 23-24mph through malibu and into santa monica. along the boardwalk in santa monica i said i was going into the ocean before i went to thehotel--i got a few others to join me and we went in bike clothes and all--the water felt soooo good!!! awesome day of riding. Trek travel is helping us with our travels and all i can sayis they are awesome--if you are thinking of doing a bike trip check them out...today was only like 70 some miles and tomorrow is a short 67---wow i remember when that was long!!!! til then... michelle

Day Four 11/1 well after sulking in my room all night (sorry to all for making you worry about me--i was not doing anything drastic i just had to rescrew my head on right and climb out of my hole) the other riders were happy to see me so it was nice to know i was missed. we took off and i pulled through the cauiflower fields. i was in my element...flat farmland and after all i didn't ride the whole way yesterday..so i thought it was my duty to do most of the work. we got into lunch and after more tylenol and advil (i was alternatingthru the day) we took off for our second half. we went inland so it got hot and we had a nice 900ft climb that got some. i hung back to stay with a guy who dropped off, after all if that had been me i would hope everyone wouldn't leave me that is the nice thing about cycling--its a team--not individual. the other guys waited at the bottm of the hill and we headed back to the coast. i pulled most of the way down the coast. i had to keep slowing down because a couple of our guys were not feeling well...again a team!!! got a great massage and pasta (of course) for dinner. we are out to marina del ray tomorrow--90miles. weather is getting warmer and the mileage is going down---piece of cake. can't wait tomorrow we ride the venice boardwalk. we don't have pictures from today but should get some good ones tomorrow....til then... Day Three 10/31 okay its freezing and we have to start by 7 am so we can make it in by about 3-4 pm. our days are full--not much r&r. by the time we make it in we have to wait for our luggage then shaower then i'm teaching a stretch class then its dinner then its get ready for the next day of riding then go to bed....remember we change locations every day so you don't unpack!!! anyway....we turn south out of the hotel and hit our first hill(500ft climb) GOOD MORNING LEGS!!!! i was okay for about the first 15 miles and then it really got knarly--cliff edges with no guard rails, winding down hills with lots of gravel. i just tensed too much and then there were alot of short but steep uphills which require lots of power. by about 25miles my lowback was killing me--i was literally crying --people were going by me and asking if i was okay--i had to ride about 40 miles to lunch in excruciating pain and by myself--it took EVERY THING out of me. i quit at lunch hoping i would be able to ride the next day so i opted to sag it in. well that took 3 1/2 hours to wait to be sagged in--my physical and emotional state was wrecked and as soon as i got to the hotel at about 4:45 i started to cry. i basicallywent to the room and just stayed in all night--i was asleep by 7pm. the only good thing about that day was i won a new trek bike at the raffle at dinner. you couldn't pay me to ride that portion of the ride again---it was just to scary---i did it once--but that was enough...tomorrow 104 miles so i hope my back will last... yes...we are alive!!! day two took us into big sur and there was NO CELL or INTERNET service. day three... well...let 's go through day two first. it was supposed to be 73--but somehow they changed the route to 77.7. (we want our shirts changed so we have the up to date mileage) the beginning was uneventful--through artichoke and strawberry fields and it was cloudy and cool. lunch was at the bottom of about a mile hill (in carmel) which meant you had to climb out immediately after lunch. we decided next time we'll stop at the top and have lunch at a nice bistro and skip the hill. the scenery came after lunch--breathtaking...chkn ltl i crossed the bixby bridge and said a prayer for you---and i looked--just for you!!!! gorgeous!! then it was into the redwoods...by then we were at about mile 65-70 and i truly thought i only had about 4 more miles to go. luckily jonathon pulled me in but my body was pretty much done---again we had to wait about 2 hours for our rooms and luggage. i learned and put my recovery stuff with me so at least i had that. big sur is beautiful but a tad cold and very simple accomadations. hardest day tomorrow--114 miles and 10,000 ft (not 15,000 as first thought) Michellehttp://www.sulic.com/francois/
