UNION-TRIBUNE
April 27, 2007

Background: Raised in Chicago, Pomper, 28, was an All-America water polo player in high school. After attending the University of Kansas, where she didn't play water polo and majored in communications, Pomper focused on her fitness again by running a half marathon and marathon. Wanting to live in San Diego for some time, she moved here 31/2 years ago and works for a company that produces charity events. She took up the triathlon two years ago and has fallen hard for the sport. At the Ford Ironman Arizona last weekend, Pomper finished fourth out of 45 in her age group (11 hours, 23 minutes) and missed qualifying for Ironman Hawaii by less than five minutes.

Quick hits: Pomper, who lives in Ocean Beach, trains with Felipe Loureiro's Breakaway Training group. Arizona was her second Ironman. She improved her time by more than 50 minutes. On average, she trains 16-19 hours a week.

Cove lover: Pomper's favorite San Diego activity: swimming at La Jolla Cove. "Being that I swam for so many years in a Chicago pool, it's like swimming in an aquarium. There's no lanes. You don't have to worry about flip turns. It's beautiful."

Faves file: Pomper's favorite recent movie: "Babel." "It was fast-paced, the cinematography was amazing. The story was phenomenal." Favorite book: J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye." "I liked how real the descriptions were." Favorite TV program: "Arrested Development." "It's so witty and so smart. The characters are just hilarious."

Hello! Hope all is well with you all. I will be competing in my 2nd Ironman this Sunday, Ironman Arizona. I can be tracked online at www.ironmanlive.com, click on the Ironman Arizona link, and the will be an option to "Track an Athlete." My progress can be tracked with my last name or my bib number, #2087. My teammate and good friend Colleen Woelfel will also be competing in the race. This will be here first! Here bib number is #2242

I am shooting to finish the race in 11 hours and 30 minutes. I came down with Bronchitis 2 weeks ago, and hoping to kick the last bit of it by this weekend. I hope the last 2 weeks of my rest/taper/taking it easy will pay off.

At the race, I will have the loving support of my platonic life partner, Joanna, my very dear friend, Joe, my sweetheart/ the best boyfriend a girl could ask for, Brian, and Brian's very dear friend Anthony and his family. I ask you to please send Colleen and I good thoughts and prayers on Sunday!
