Hello folks,
There are just over 8 weeks left until my second attempt at completing an Ironman distance triathlon. This season has been an incredible journey for me. I think I did it right this time. I hired a coach to keep me on track with my training. I hired Felipe Loureiro of Breakaway Training. He has helped me and kept me motivated this whole season. (If you need a great coach please look up Felipe.) I have also using the nutrition knowledge of Mona Treadwell; she has been helping with some training food issues. What a great help she has been.
So far I have been healthy and injury free. I have made some awesome mistakes in training and I the events I have participated in. I am sure your wondering "How can making mistakes be awesome?" It is all part of the learning curve. You go out and train, make a mistake and that gives you the chance to learn. The day of an Ironman is not the day to learn, it is the day to be prepared and knowledgeable. What am I getting myself into? Do I have the right gear? Do I have enough fuel to make this happen? Is my mind clear and focused?
A lot of people along this journey have asked me "How long will this take you? Are you going to win this? Are you going to qualify for Hawaii?" My mantra and goal has always been the same since I started this sport back in 2001. "To win is to finish!" My goal is to always finish. How long will this take? Who knows, it's an Ironman. Remember last year; it rained, it was cold, there were tough winds and oh yeah there was the girl. You can try to prepare for every possible scenario but you never know what curveball Ironman is going to throw at you the day of the event.
Up to this point I have swam over 75 miles, bike over 1600 miles and I have ran over 300 miles. That is over 1975 miles; I could have ridden my bike from San Diego to my home town of Detroit this season. I still have 8 tough weeks of training to go. Yes I am a triathlon geek and I yes I am tracking this. I can bet that I didn't reach these numbers in my Ironman Wisconsin training season. I think if you were to spend a day asking the people I train with and the people it socialize with, they would tell you my commitment to this event has been nothing less than serious. My focus has been on and determination has been heightened.
I can't express enough on how being part of such a challenge has changed my life. I have had to make a ton of sacrifices again this season, some I hope I will never regret and others I know have made me a better person. Every time I don my swim cap, air up my tires or lace up my shoes, I feel this energy of life going through me. I guess knowing that my family and friends stand behind me with 100% support as I take on this challenge, gives me that extra push that I need when the alarm goes off at 4:00AM on a Saturday morning.
Last season I did the shirt of Hopes and Memories. I would like to do the same thing this season. If there is someone that you now who has Beat, Battling, or lost their life to: Heart Disease, Any form of Cancer, MS, and/or Autism. I have chosen these diseases because I am personally in touch with people who have these dreaded diseases. Once again I am not asking for money, I am just asking for the names of the angels who can help carry me across that finish line. All the names will be put on the jersey/shirt that I will be wearing as I cross the 2007 Ironman Florida Finish line. My promise to all of you is I/we will finish this one together.
If you want to make any kind of charitable donation or learn more about these diseases, I have listed the links to the websites.
