More Breakaway Progress...
by Dave Platfoot www.davepl.blogspot.com

When it's sunny and 70+ degrees in San Diego, we know why we pay so much to live here. It couldn't have been a better weekend - a perfect 2 days of training.

Met up with the usual group on Saturday for the long ride. My training plan called for a full 5 hours, so stayed on the coast and made it up to San Clemente and back. Nice to have a slight tailwind for once on the way home. My goal for the ride was to negative split. Done. Also did the usual trail run afterwards, keeping the HR in zone 2. My arms were fried and not used to sunshine, must be that time of year to use sunscreen again. My legs have the offensive farmer tan going on in full effect now too.

Sunday was the San Dieguito Half Marathon and having never done it before we heard it was not a good course to go for a PR because of all the hills. Whatever. The plan was to go under 1hr27min, and we were going to stick to it, just like Cbad.
Dave N, Nick, Nuno and I decided to run the half together and go from there. Cool.

That 1st half mile is all downhill and tricky to start the race, but we got into a groove and passed the 3 mile marker around 19:30ish. Nick kept trying to sabotage my race by tripping me with an "accidental" kick to my foot while running practically on my back. I think he did the same to Dave N too. We couldn't get rid of him anyway, so we decided to let it go since he just got a new bike and all. We were secretly jealous of his new bike.

We hit the 6.5ish mark around 43min and change, so we were on pace but the course seemed like it was one uphill after another. The roads kept winding around where you couldn't see it crest, then flatten out and go up again. Kinda frustrating. But, the downhills came a little more often in the last 5 miles, so everything was evening out. With about 2 miles to go Nick comes flying out from behind both Dave and I then goes all the way to the right side of the road. Dave and I both thought he was going to take off but he claims he was just moving around us. Oh, well sorry to be the way there, buddy!

At about 1.5 miles to go, Nick high-fives Queen Elizabeth and before we know it we reach the last hill to the finish. We managed to pass 2 more people on that last uphill and I thought for sure Nick and Dave would sprint past me to the finish, but I was lucky enough to get in a few seconds of a gap on the hill.
We all had a great race and all set PR's. Dave N and Nick really kept the pace up and we all worked together to stay on track.

My average HR was 171 and I'm very impressed at how it came down during the flats and downhills. Compare that HR to Cbad only 3 weeks ago and, while it's only a 1 beat higher average, it's almost a 1min16sec improvement with a lot more hills.
Here's my last 3 half HR data:
SilverStrand: HR Average 184, Max HR 201, time 1:28:12.
Carlsbad: HR Average 170, Max HR 187, time 1:27:20.
San Dieguito: HR Average 171, Max HR 192, time 1:26:04.

A solid improvement, one after another.

My "official" time was 1:25:54, although, my watch had 1:26:04, but I'll take the 1:25 for sure, anyday! The training is really paying off now as my HR is averaging lower for each race, compared to speed. I have to thank Felipe and Luke for these improvements. Last year, I would've never expected to be a 1:25 half marathoner, so it just shows how following a Breakaway Training program is the key to progressing.

I'm extremely stoked on everyone else's run yesterday. Dave N got 2nd in his AG, and Nick got 3rd (you're welcome guys!). I think out of the Breakaway group there were at least 7 PR's! And that's on a pretty difficult course, so congratulations to everyone.
Lalita scored her fastest 5k too! Jaybuddy got to drink beer during the race and Nuno scored a 1:28! High-fives all around.
Also, thanks to Briggs for showing up to support the team.
