Background Genovese grew up in Boulder, Colo., where he was a multisport athlete, earning varsity letters for four years in baseball and golf. It was in golf, though, that he stood out, earning a scholarship to Oregon. Genovese, 30, went on to play for a year and a half on the old Buy.com Tour. He was one of the longest drivers on the tour, averaging 316 yards one season. Genovese took up triathlon last year and enjoyed immediate success, tying for first in the 25-29 age group in the Koz Enterprise Series.

Quick hits A mortgage broker, Genovese lives in Del Mar. He's coached by Felipe Loureiro. His stepfather is former major league catcher John Stearns.

The golf grind Genovese on what it was like traveling around the country on the Buy.com Tour in a Chevy Tahoe: “I burned myself out, but I loved what came from it. You kind of find out who you are. What I found out is that I value my family and probably a home base and my friends. I was out chasing this thing around (trying) to make some money, when all I wanted to do was go home and see my family and have more experiences with them. That, and I'm not very good with failure.”

Training log In an average week Genovese swims 2 hours, 10 minutes; bikes 4 hours; runs 2-½ hours; lifts weights 1-½ hours; and cross-trains 3 hours.

Off to San Clemente Genovese's ideal workout: a 40-mile bike loop in San Clemente, pushing the pace at about 23 mph, followed by a 4-to 5-mile run at a 6:30 per-mile pace, then a 30-minute evening swim. “It works every single piece of your body,” he said. “Swimming, that would be my yoga, especially at a cruise pace. It elongates the body.”

Genovese's favorite TV programs: “America's Funniest Home Videos” and “House.” Genovese on “House”: “The doctor's real sarcastic, kind of a blunt jerk. It fits my personality. His favorite movie: “Scent of a Woman,” starring Al Pacino. His favorite book: “A Good Walk Spoiled,” by John Feinstein.

Tiger tales As a teenager, Genovese once played with Tiger Woods in the Junior World Golf Championships at Torrey Pines. “It was like playing with a 30-year-old veteran who'd been on tour for five years,” said Genovese. “Since he was a kid he's been on a whole other level. He was incredible.”
